And if you had, how’s your experience so far?

Microsoft has started the public rollout of Windows 10 October 2018 Update, also known as version 1809, and the first computers are being updated as we speak.

Just like it happened in the case of the April 2018 Update, the release takes place in stages, and this approach allows Microsoft to deal with potential bugs easier than it would have to in case the new OS feature update would be published for everyone at once.

At the same time, because some people just can’t wait any longer, Microsoft allows them to download the update on request by simply checking for updates on Windows Update.

A quick check for updates on a Windows 10 Fall Creators Update should thus trigger the upgrade if your system isn’t flagged as potentially affected by compatibility issues, and needless to say, there are lots of users who already turned to this option.

Most of the people who rushed to install Windows 10 October 2018 Update are power users or IT pros and for them, hitting a bug or two isn’t the end of the world. They have the know-how to diagnose bugs, find their cause, and fix them, but most importantly, they can send feedback to Microsoft and help the company resolve the problems before they impact more PCs.

By the looks of things, the updating experience to Windows 10 version 1809 is flawless so far, and I’ve only seen a few reports of failed installs. In most of the cases, there were problems caused by insufficient space or security solutions blocking the process.

But Windows 10 October 2018 Update installing correctly is definitely good news, especially following the problems that hit the April 2018 Update.

Earlier this year, Microsoft halted the rollout of the April update after it discovered that the upgrade failed on some systems running specific software, like Avast antivirus. Some of these PCs ended up with a black screen and were unable to recover, in some rare cases requiring a clean install.

Furthermore, there were lots of glitches experienced post-installation, and Microsoft resolved them one by one with the release of cumulative updates every month.

Smooth upgrades so far

For now, however, this doesn’t seem to be the case of the October 2018 Update, though it goes without saying that the more PCs receive it, the bigger the chances for similar problems to surface.

At this point, the rollout is still in its early days, so it’s unlikely that too many PCs have already installed the new OS version, though the user categories mentioned above are the most likely to upgrade their computers in the first hours after the launch.

Without a doubt, adoption of the October 2018 Update will increase in the coming days and during the weekend, and it should continue next week when Microsoft will also ship the very first cumulative update for this particular OS version.

The October 2018 Patch Tuesday takes place next week, and as it happens every month, Microsoft ships security updates for its software, including cumulative updates for every Windows 10 version.

Since the October 2018 Update is already up for grabs, the company should publish an update for this version too, and in addition to security fixes, other improvements and refinements based on user feedback are also expected.

With more and more systems receiving the update as we speak, we wanted to hear from you. Have you already updated your system to the October 2018 Update? How’s your experience so far? Are there any issues that other people may be aware or is everything running smoothly? Have you encountered any problems during the upgrade?
